Rocks Beats Scissors
West Bay was the setting for a 3-day free family event this week - Rocks Beats Scissors - that's fossils, music & crafts, and possibly one of the cleverest event titles ever!.
A joint project between the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team, the Bridport Museum Trust & the National Trust Jurassic Coast Team, supported by the Dorset AONB Team and the Dorset Wildlife Trust, Rocks Beats Scissors was designed to be a fun, education event for families visiting Dorset's Jurassic Coast during the school holidays.
There really was something for everyone;
The finale of the event was a procession through West Bay of Penelope the Plesiosaur, made by the visitors over the previous 3 days, with all the families joining in the fun!
There was also a poetry competition running over the 3 days and at the end of West Bay Pier the winning poem was read out:
Old and New
New waves come in every day, washing the cliffs away
Look carefully and you will find fossils,
Taking your breath away.
In cliffs you would not believe the treasures,
That lie inside.
Boats ride the waves taking the foamy spray,
Gliding away to the sun.
Beaches covered in sparkling stones fills you with pleasure
Everything is old and new so treasure them forever.
Congratulations to Tommy Chatten, aged 11 who wins his family a guided fossil walk with Sam Scriven, Earth Sciences Manager for the World Heritage Site Team.
Following the huge success of the event, it is hoped to run Rocks Beats Scissors in 2012 - we'd love to hear your feedback, please get in touch if you have any comments or suggestions.
